This large, sloped garden belongs to a beautiful contemporary house on an exclusive road in Otford, near Sevenoaks in Kent. The garden was a complete blank canvas and the client’s brief was to design and build a world-class acer garden set against an immaculate background with an entertainment area at the top of the garden overlooking the house below.

We first planted mature yew hedging at the boundaries and installed cedar Venetian screening along the back boundary. This was followed by two cascading circular Millboard decks that were carved into the hill and bordered by log rolls stained to match the deck, a nod to the Japanese garden style the client enjoys. In order to create instant impact, we planted an exclusive selection of Japanese acers of all colours and larger specimen trees. The whole garden was fitted with premium artificial lawn and we installed the outdoor furniture, a mains-gas powered fire bowl, large cantilever patio heater and decorative lighting.

To create the two cascading decks set into the hill, required the excavation of large sections of chalky soil, which was retained towards the decks with log rolls, which were stained to match the Millboard composite deck and the edging around the in-ground beds. Each board was cut to fit snugly around individual log rolls.

Large Specimen Tree Planting

We hand-selected several large specimen trees, amongst them an ancient olive tree, and a large Niwaki pine which had to be flown in and put in place via helicopter. Collaborating with Architectural Plants we sourced a helicopter and pilot with the skills to place the trees accurately inside the large tree pits we had excavated. From securing permission to temporarily store the trees on an adjacent field, to ensuring the trees were safely wrapped and strapped inside the hoisting gear and planted on arrival, we orchestrated the smooth delivery of this spectacular garden to the satisfaction of our discerning client.
